National Stress Awareness Day: 6 ways to support stressed out staff

Does your employee’s mood shift quickly? Has their productivity dropped? And are they taking more and more sick leave? Sounds like a classic case of stress. Sadly, they’re not alone.

Over the past year, 74% of UK adults have felt so stressed that they’ve been overwhelmed or unable to cope, according to the Mental Health Foundation. So what can you do about it?

Take note of these six ways to de-stress your staff—in honour of National Stress Awareness Day.

  1. Offer flexible working hours

Your staff have a life outside of work. So help them juggle their responsibilities with flexitime.

As long as your staff work the core hours that you set, they can come in earlier or work later. And they don’t even have to stick to the same schedule.

They can come in earlier when they have to pick up a mate from the airport, or start later to allow them to drop their kids off at school.

Giving your staff this flexibility helps them feel as though their work and home life is balanced. And as a result, you get a happier and more productive workforce.

  1. Encourage mindfulness

We all need to press pause on our day once in a while. That’s why it could be worth making space for a meditation room in your workplace.

Use a spare meeting room and encourage your staff to take five when they feel like work is getting on top of them. They can either sit in peaceful silence or use a meditation app.

They’ll come back to their work feeling refreshed and ready to tackle the task that felt impossible before.

  1. Promote good physical health

While there’s a big emphasis on mental health in the workplace, you can’t neglect your team’s physical health.

When your staff exercise they can cope better with stress and get more restful sleep. Plus, they’re less likely to fall ill.

So you could ditch your stuffy indoor meetings for a leisurely stroll outside, set up an on-site yoga class, or offer gym memberships to get your team moving.

  1. Praise staff for their good work

There’s a certain level of stress and pressure with any job. But your staff are more likely to stick around if you recognise their hard work.

Grab them for a quick one-to-one chat or make a small announcement in your team meeting of their achievement. Your employee will come in the next day with a spring in their step.

  1. Sit down with your staff

If your employee’s struggling to manage their stress, set up a meeting with them. Ask what you can do to support them and come up with an action plan together.

This might include agreeing changes to their tasks, helping to prioritise their workload, or allowing extra breaks from work. Taking the time to rearrange your employee’s work could save them from burning out and taking long-term sick.
