Workers can now opt out of pension auto-enrolment
From 1st July 2026, workers who have been automatically enrolled in the ‘My Future Fund’ pension scheme can now choose to opt out. But there is a two-month window to do so. And those who opt to leave the scheme will automatically be re-enrolled after two years if they are still eligible.
Make sure you understand and are complying with your employer responsibilities, or risk fines and imprisonment, especially if you obstruct employee participation.

Irish workers need 10 days’ holiday to reset
A recent study shows that Irish workers need three days less than the EU average to fully recharge from work. They’re also using their annual leave flexibly, with a mixture of shorter, ad hoc breaks and longer trips. If your employees are taking shorter breaks, think about whether that leaves you short-staffed. If so, you could consider your policies around staffing levels and annual leave.
You can refuse annual leave at busy times, but don’t forget your employees have work and family responsibilities, as well as the need to rest. Equally, if an employee is refusing to take annual leave, you can consult with them and force them to take leave. Record keeping is especially important here, as you need to prove you have encouraged everyone to take leave.
Only 19% of employers feel prepared for AI
According to a new survey, Irish workplaces are falling behind in preparing their workforces for the impact of AI. However, almost two thirds of organisations have identified automation, technology, and AI as major strategic points.
So, what do employers need to do to prepare for AI implementation? Firstly, responsible and sustainable deployment of AI. Keep learning, discussing, and making changes if things don’t work. And make sure your employees are getting the training they need.
