Occupational Health and Safety Code Changes came into full force (March 2025)

Consolidated Violence & Harassment Prevention Plan

Employers had to merge existing violence and harassment policies into one plan that:

  • Is developed with input from the Joint H&S Committee, H&S reps, or affected workers.
  • Is reviewed at least every 3 years, or sooner if an incident occurs, the workplace changes, or the committee requests it.
  • Is rolled out with new training for both managers and employees.

Nursing PTSD Presumption (2025)

Alberta extended Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB) presumptive coverage for post-traumatic stress injuries to nurses, recognizing the toll of frontline healthcare. Now, nurses—like first responders—can access mental health support and compensation without having to prove the injury was work-related.

WCB Hearing Loss Policy Update (June 2025)

The WCB updated its criteria for hearing loss (and in some cases tinnitus), making it easier for workers to qualify. Employers must now also document audiometric testing and exposure prevention.

Late-Night Retail / Fueling Rules

Employers must now enforce prepayment for fuel. Plus, in addition to providing lone workers with personal emergency transmitters, they must also make sure they’re worn at all times.

Working for Workers Five (Bill 190) OHS Updates

  • Virtual Harassment: Harassment protections now also explicitly cover online behaviour—video calls, chat groups, work socials, and conferences.
  • Washroom Cleanliness Standards: Employers and constructors must maintain sanitary washroom facilities at worksites, including construction projects, with clear OHSA obligations.
  • Remote/Teleworking Rights: The Occupational Health and Safety Act is now applicable to employees that work from home. Employers must make sure their working environment adheres to the OHSA.
  • Virtual JHSC Meetings: Joint Health and Safety Committee meetings no longer have to take place in the physical workspace; they can be attended virtually.
  • Safety Bulletins: Safety information can be posted online, as long as it is readily available to employees, as opposed to being physically posted in the workplace.

Upcoming Changes to Alberta Employment Legislation

Further OHS Code Reviews

Alberta is modernizing the Code in stages. Expect future refinements to hazard controls, safety committees, and training obligations.

ESC Reform Potential

Alberta has so far resisted Ontario and BC style ESA reforms (e.g., pay transparency, onboarding info requirements), but employers should prepare for gradual alignment over the coming years.

Restriction Reduction Bills

Small, bundled amendments across ministries will continue to tweak employer obligations.
